Dr. Phillips
THE CLASSINESS OF ORLANDO
ABOUT DR.PHILLIPS
A citrus baron named Dr. Phillip Phillips is the guy that gets the cred for founding the small upscale town of Dr. Phillips that’s just west of Orlando.
Phillips owned tons of citrus groves in the 1920s; thousands of acres, to be exact.
His acreage stretched over nine counties, from Conroy Road in the north to the bottom end of the Sand Lake chain. What is today Bayhill,Orange Tree, Sand Lake Hills, Clubhouse Estates and Turkey Lake Park all used to be orange groves that were owned by Phillips.
Dr. Phillips is a great little town that about 11,000 people call home. It’s really more of a bedroom community for Orlando and the business and commercial center there.
But recently Dr. Phillips became the home of the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. This is a spectacular new venue that replaced Bob Carr performing arts center, which was built in 1926.
Now at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing arts, you can see world-class Broadway performances, concerts, and productions. Also in the classrooms, you can take wellness and educational classes and seminars.
In the summer there are music camps offered in jazz music and vocal performance, and camps in dance and theater arts.
Dr. Phillips is also a great town if you want to visit all the central Florida attractions. You can almost bike to some of them. Well, you’d have to be a pretty good bicyclist. But If you have a car, any of the attractions are super easy to get to.
You’ve got Sea World, Universal Studios, and the Disney parks, and then less-known places like the Morse Museum, Orlando Science Center, the Orange County convention Center, and Leu Gardens. These are all pretty close to Dr. Phillips.
The awesome thing about Dr. Phillips is that the beaches are so close. You can go east or west, drive an hour or two, and hit completely different kinds of beaches.
Atlantic coast beaches tend to be a bit rougher, with more waves, and sand set below road level. Out that direction you’ve got Merritt Island national seashore as well as Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy space Center.
The Gulf coast has calm, warm waters that are fun too. Even the Miami beaches and the Florida Keys aren’t too far away..
